Concrete Slabs San Antonio

Whether you’re putting down a pad for a new shed, building a workshop, installing a hot tub, or replacing a settled AC slab, the concrete underneath has to be poured right. A failed slab cracks, tips, and pulls everything sitting on it out of level.

The most common slab projects we pour

Residential slabs come in every size and use case. We pour them all the same way — with attention to base prep, reinforcement, joint planning, and finish.

Common residential slabs:

  • Shed and storage building pads
  • Workshop and detached garage slabs
  • Hot tub pads (engineered for the weight + water)
  • AC and HVAC equipment pads
  • Pool equipment pads
  • Generator pads
  • Trash bin / dumpster pads
  • Greenhouse and garden building pads

Why base prep matters more than the concrete itself

Most slab failures aren’t really concrete failures — they’re base failures. If the soil under your slab compresses unevenly, the slab cracks and tips no matter how good the pour was. We excavate to depth, lay a compacted aggregate base in lifts, and tamp it before any forming or rebar goes in.

Slab thickness and reinforcement

The right slab spec depends entirely on what’s going on it.

Typical thickness guidelines:

  • 4″ slab — most sheds, garden buildings, light workshop use
  • 5″ slab — heavier workshops, single-vehicle garages
  • 6″ slab — RV pads, heavy equipment, large workshops
  • Thickened edges — required by most metal building manufacturers

Finishes for residential slabs

Most slabs get a simple broom or smooth-trowel finish, which is durable, slip-resistant, and easy to clean. For visible slabs we can step up to a steel-trowel finish for a smoother surface.

FAQs

Concrete Slabs FAQs

How thick should my concrete slab be?

Four inches is standard for sheds and light residential use. Workshops, garages, and anything carrying weight typically need five or six inches.

Do I need rebar in my slab?

Yes, we reinforce every slab with rebar or wire mesh. It’s inexpensive insurance against cracking and dramatically increases slab life.

What's a thickened-edge slab and why do metal buildings need one?

A thickened-edge slab has a deeper perimeter beam — usually 12 to 16 inches deep — to handle the concentrated point loads where metal building columns anchor down.

How long does a slab pour take?

Most residential slabs are 2 to 4 working days total — forming and prep one day, pour and finish the next, then cure time.

Can you pour a slab on a sloped lot?

Yes. We either step the slab to follow grade, build up the low side with compacted base, or pour a thickened slab with footings.

Do I need a permit for a slab in San Antonio?

Small detached slabs for sheds and equipment usually don’t require permits. Slabs for habitable structures or anything attached to your home generally do.
