Frequently Asked Questions

What is stamped concrete and how is it different from regular concrete?

Stamped concrete is poured concrete that is imprinted with textured mats while the surface is still workable, so the finished slab takes on the look of flagstone, slate, brick, cobblestone, or wood plank. Color comes from three layers: integral pigment mixed into the truck, a broadcast color hardener that also densifies the surface, and an antiquing release that settles into the grout lines for depth. The result reads like natural stone, but it stays one monolithic reinforced slab, so there are no individual units to shift, settle, or grow weeds between.

Most stamped concrete installations in the San Antonio area run about $12 to $20 per square foot. Single color, single pattern work sits at the lower end of that range. Multi tone coloring, custom borders, hand cut grout lines, and demolition and haul off of an existing slab move you toward the upper end. Site conditions matter as well, since limited backyard access, heavy grading, and a thicker pour for vehicle traffic all add to the number. Estimates are free, and we price the job on site rather than over the phone.

It does not have to be. Sealer on its own can be slick, which is why we broadcast a fine polymer grit into the sealer coat on pool decks, patios, and entry walkways. The stamped texture itself also breaks up standing water. For pool surrounds we recommend a deeper texture pattern paired with a matte or satin sealer instead of a high gloss finish, which gives you traction without losing the color.

Concrete handles South Texas heat and UV far better than wood or composite decking, which fade, splinter, and get hot underfoot. The bigger local factor is the expansive clay soil found across much of Bexar County, which swells in wet weather and shrinks in drought. We manage that with a properly compacted base, correct slab thickness, steel reinforcement, and control joints cut at the right spacing so seasonal movement shows up in a planned joint instead of a random crack. Lighter colors also stay noticeably cooler in July and August.

Most residential projects take three to five days on site. That covers demolition and grading, forming and reinforcement, pour and stamp day, then detailing, joint cutting, and sealing. Stamp day is the weather sensitive one, since the crew has a limited window to work the surface before the concrete sets up. You can usually walk on the slab after 24 to 48 hours, and vehicles should stay off a stamped driveway for about seven days.

Plan on resealing every two to three years in this climate, and sooner for a driveway or a full sun patio that takes constant UV and traffic. Sealing keeps the color rich, blocks stains from grease, leaf tannins, and grill spills, and protects the surface from wear. Between sealings, maintenance is simply rinsing the surface and washing it occasionally.

In most cases, yes. Stamped concrete generally installs for less than natural flagstone or travertine and less than most paver systems, while producing a very similar look. It also costs less to own, since pavers need joint sand replenished and individual units reset as the base settles, whereas a stamped slab mainly needs periodic resealing. The one advantage pavers hold is spot repair, because a single unit can be lifted and replaced. Stamped concrete repairs are possible but require color blending to match.
